    When is a Permit needed?

Municipal Construction Permits WILL NOT be issued without proof of NJ State Registration from any contractor working on your home. Applications packets are available at: Beverly City Construction Office, or by calling Consumer Affairs at 1-888-656-6225 or online at: https://newjersey.mylicense.com/verification/

Home improvements include but not limited to: the construction, installation, replacement of swimming pools, additions, fences, porches, windows, doors, kitchens, bathrooms, garages, finished basements, basement waterproofing, fire protection devices, security protection devices, central heating and air conditioning equipment, water softeners, heaters, and purifiers, solar heating or water systems, insulation installation, and roofing and siding.  Always call the Construction Department prior to starting your project to see if a permit is required.

A Construction Permit, which may include a Building, Electrical, Fire and/or Plumbing Sub-Code technical section, is required to do any of the following as listed below.

The following is a general guide – each job may have different requirements and may need more than is listed below

Construction permit applications for projects which change the footprint of the building, lot coverage, use of the space, etc. may also require a Zoning approval. An application for Zoning can be obtained from the City Construction Office.

Please be advised that swimming pools are not to be used until all final inspections have been completed. The final building and electric must be approved for your protection.

    Obligations During Construction:

    • Any work which does not conform to the approved plans will require re inspection. If the work continues without resolving the problem, the applicant will be fined and the job stopped.
    • Applicants are required to post the Permit prominently on the site and to keep a copy of the approved Plans at the site.
    • When the project is completed, the applicant must call for Final Building, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Inspections prior to occupying.

State law mandates that the Construction Official issue a fine to any person who performs work without a Permit if the construction is of a nature which requires a Permit.

What happens after the permit is issued?

Periodically, inspections will be required. In the case of some work such as roofing or siding, there will only be a final inspection needed. All inspection requests will require at least 24 hours notice prior to the date your inspection is needed. Once the work has been completed and final inspection has been approved, a Certificate of Approval or Certificate of Occupancy, depending on the type of work done, will be issued. The Construction Office will not send a copy of the Certificate unless you request one. A copy will be kept on file with the Building Permit.
